A diverse assemblage of sedimentary mosses was discovered in Lake Bâlea
The Holocene reconstruction of the vegetation of the Carpathians above the timber line has so far proved problematic for researchers, as pollen studies are only suitable for this purpose to a limited extent. We are conducting a traditional plant macrofossil study in the Fogaras Mountains on the sediment of Lake Bâlea. The results exceeded all expectations. The sediment is particularly rich in moss remains. Among them, the presence of several arctic-alpine species was detected during the Holocene. These results will very well complement the sedaDNA studies performed on the sediment.
