Conferences in June

We are happy to announce the two events that took place in October (22nd International Symposium on Chironomidae and 27th Hungarian Paleontological Meeting), during which the results of several researches financed by the ÉMNL 5B subproject were presented in the form of oral presentations.

22nd International Symposium on Chironomidae

The 22nd International Symposium on Chironomidae took place from 17-19 June at the University of Niš, Serbia. The conference brought together researchers even from outside Europe to study the taxonomy, ecology and applications of chironomids in palaeoecological reconstructions. The workshops preceding the symposium also provided participants with an opportunity to expand their knowledge on the paleolimnological applications and morphology of chironomids. Both the conference and the workshops provided an excellent platform for the presentation of recent research results, the exchange of scientific knowledge and the exploration of innovative methods within the field of paleolimnology.

We are proud to report that two of our students presented their results to the best in the field. Bea Bartalovics, a master's student at the University of Pécs, compared the chironomid communities of the Siófok, Szemesi, Keszthely and Szigligeti basins as part of her paleolimnological research on Lake Balaton, highlighting the different fauna of our largest lakes’ basins and the varying degrees of human impact. Eszter Tombor, a PhD student (ELTE), studied the chironomid fauna and other geochemical variables of two high mountain lakes in the Retezat Mountains from the point of view of climate change and human impacts.

Both presentations received very positive feedback from the researchers, Eszter was even awarded the prize for the best student presentation.

27th Hungarian Palaeontological Meeting

Between 30 May and 1 June 2024, the 27th Hungarian Palaeontological Meeting was held in Eger, Hungary. The three-day conference was attended by 60 registered participants from Hungarian universities and research institutes, including Eszter Tombor (ELTE), our PhD student. Eszter presented at this prestigious Hungarian conference the 400-year history of the chironomid fauna in Retezat alpine lakes and the resilience of these lakes to climate change. The conference ended with a field tour around archaeological sites in the Bükk Mountains and wine tasting in Eger.
