Reliable biodiversity assessments using species distribution models are essential for effective conservation and management. Understanding factors influencing the models' performance is crucial for improving their reliability, yet such links remain underexplored in marine systems. An international research collaboration led by Ying Liu and Shuaishuai Liu from China addressed this gap: the scientists quantified the effects of geographical and species-level factors on model performance in tropical reef fishes. The study revealed that performance is strongly associated with the distribution's latitude, proximity to shore, and environmental similarity between training and evaluation datasets. Other factors, such as range size, parental care, range coverage and species description year, were also found to be determinant. The paper was co-authored by Ákos Bede-Fazekas, assistant professor of our department. It was published in the D1-ranked journal "Diversity and Distributions".
