Holocene paleoclimate in the South Carpathians - Report from 19th Carpathian Basin Conference for Environmental Sciences

Last week (3-5 April 2024) the 19th Carpathian Basin Conference for Environmental Sciences was held in Debrecen, Hungary. Main topics of the conference were environmental physics, waste management, environmental chemistry, ecology, agriculture & environment and environmental geography & geology. Aneta Formáčková from our team actively participated in the Ecology section with her presentation focused on "Holocene Ecological Dynamics of Lake Bâlea (2034 m), S. Carpathians: Climate Reconstruction Study - preliminary results".

The presentation summarized the methodology and procedures used to analyze sediment collected from alpine Lake Bâlea, situated in the Southern Carpathians in Romania. Presented were also the newly obtained data from the analysis of the Holocene chironomid fauna from this lake, which provided insights into the ecological and stratigraphical aspects. The results also included the focus on the reconstruction of July air temperatures and environmental changes in the lake during the Holocene period.
