Our PhD student's presentation on Roman-age vegetation changes at the 19th Carpathian Basin Environmental Science Conference in Debrecen
Máté Merkl, our colleague, participated in the 19th Carpathian Basin Environmental Science Conference in Debrecen between 3-5 April. He delivered a presentation titled 'Reconstruction of Roman-age Land Cover in Transdanubia (Pannonia) through Pollen, Anthracology, Carpology, and GIS Analyses.' He presented the characteristics and changes of Roman-age land cover determined based on pollen analysis, discussed the characteristics of low Lake Balaton water levels in Roman times reconstructed from green algae found in sediments, described the forest cover and cereal cultivation determinable based on charred seeds and charcoal remains found at processed Pannonian archaeological sites, and presented the results of our processing of soil, potential vegetation cover, and landscape character maps. Finally, he summarized our current conclusions drawn from Roman-era landscape utilization.
